Justin Kwiatkowski

Where are you from?

Just outside of Syracuse, NY

Where do you attend school? Share with us the city/town, what you are majoring in, what your academic interests are?

I am a Master of Science in Landscape Architecture Student at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. I am studying the feasibility of creating woodland schoolyards in the Syracuse City School District.

What are your career or educational goals?

My goals are simple. To work on projects to see the world change for the better, preferably with a lot of trees.

Outside of school and work what are your hobbies and/or interests?

I am interested in propagating and cultivating trees to become bonsai.

What is your internship project focus? Explain what you will be doing, which parks/partners will you be working with? Who is your mentor at OCLP?

Under John Auwaerter at the Center for Cultural Landscape Preservation I will be working on the Cultural Landscape Report for Flight 93 National Memorial.

Why did you choose to participate in a Designing the Parks Internship? How is your internship hosted? (Examples include: LHIP, NCPE, ACE, HBCUI, Mosaics in Science, etc)

In the summer of 2019, before I returned to SUNY ESF, I began working as a research assistant at the Center for Cultural Landscape Preservation. I was excited to use my skills in the landscape architecture to produce maps of National Parks and my urban forestry experience to better conduct park inventories.

What are you looking forward to learning or exploring during your internship?

I am excited to eventually make a site visit to Flight 93. The travel, fieldwork, and social interactions will be a very welcome change of pace from my COVID-19 quarantine world.

What types of opportunities will Designing the Parks provide you with?

I am excited to see what enrichment activities/training will be provided to the DTP interns. Based on our brainstorming session we will have some great opportunities.
