Clelie Fielding

Where are you from?

I am from a small town in southern New Hampshire.

 Where do you attend school?

I recently graduated from Smith College located in Northampton, MA. I majored in Architecture and Urbanism, with a minor Landscape Studies.

What are your career or educational goals?

Before I continue my education (likely a masters in landscape architecture or urban planning), I aim to work at a few different architectural firms that produce socially equitable and environmentally conscious designs.

Outside of school and work what are your hobbies and/or interests?

I played lacrosse in college and have recently become a certified referee for high school games. I love spending time outside, so usually you can find me running, biking, hiking, or exploring Boston! I also enjoy cooking, crafting, playing cards, and listening to music.

What is your internship project focus?

My project focus is updating Cultural Landscape Inventories (CLIs) with my mentor Jeff Killion. This involves editing the previous iteration of maps and text to reflect the current existing conditions. I will be working on plans for Acadia National Park, Women’s Rights National Historic Site, and Shenandoah National Parks amongst others.

Why did you choose to participate in a Designing the Parks Internship?

My internship is hosted by the National Council for Preservation Education (NCPE), and I chose to take this internship because I was intrigued by the idea of working for the National Park Service, being involved in designing of the parks, and learning about the how the parks are maintained, documented and preserved.

What are you looking forward to learning or exploring during your internship?

I am excited to continue developing my graphic design skills that I developed in school that I am able to fully utilize in this work. I am hoping to visit a few of the parks that I will creating maps for and seeing the park operations in action.

What types of opportunities will Designing the Parks provide you with?

This internship is a unique opportunity to experience the inner workings of a regional office of the NPS. I am thrilled to be introduced to this excellent network of talented people who are invested in the values of the parks service, and dedicated to sharing them with the next generation. I know that when my internship comes to a close I will carry what I learn here into my future work.
